National Conventions in July
This summer both NEA and AFT will hold their national conventions during the month of July. The NEA’s Representative Assembly is an annual event and will be held July 3-7, in Denver, CO. The AFT Convention is held every other year in even numbered years. The AFT Annual Convention will be held July 16-19 in Washington, DC.
While the structures of the conventions may vary, the purpose of the meetings is very similar. Both the NEA and AFT use their conventions for members and leaders to discuss policy, elect officers, and vote on resolutions that cover all aspects of public education.
Both nationals require LMRA compliant elections to elect delegates to the conventions. The nationals set the number of delegates to be elected and the processes to be used to select the delegates.
The AFT delegates are considered local delegates and are elected by their locals to attend. The number of delegates to be elected is based upon the number of members in the merged local on September 1, 2025. AFT will reach out to local leaders with information on delegate allotment and an election timetable closer to the convention date.
The NEA process allows for both state delegates and local delegates to be elected. Based on EWV’s membership numbers, we are allotted 15 state delegates to the convention. Locals may also elect delegates to the NEA convention based on their local membership numbers. The number of delegates to be elected is based upon the number of all members in the merged local as of January 2026. The NEA will contact local leaders with convention information including delegate allotment and voting timeframes early in the spring.
As a member of Education West Virginia, you are automatically members of both NEA and AFT. All members regardless of your original national affiliation are eligible to run in the available convention slots. You will find a nomination form for those active professional and ESP members interested in running to be state delegates to the NEA Representative Assembly this summer in Denver, CO.
Nominations for local delegates to the AFT Convention or the NEA Representative Assembly should originate as nominations and a vote during a properly noticed local membership meeting after the local has received their delegate information from the nationals.
Additional convention details for delegates are posted below.
